Voting as Damage Control
by Shane Claiborne 10-30-2008

Every day I am asked how I will be voting.

Principled Christian non-voters and secular anarchists have written to urge a public statement on voting abstinence. Good folks in both parties and plenty of journalists are frustrated that we won’t answer with a simple endorsement. That just seems too easy. Jesus was far too slick to get boxed into any political camp.

Debate tonight

Anyone have an idea about where to watch the debate tonight? I was thinking, if we're gonna be at church, I could bring a little TV with me, and we could order some pizza or somethin...anyone got other ideas?

Palin And Russia,

(Political Animal) PALIN AND RUSSIA, PART V.... It started like a harmless joke, didn't it? Sarah Palin is from Alaska, Alaska is near Russia, and since Republican rhetoric has become breathtakingly ridiculous lately, some of us joked that Republicans might think the proximity between the state and the country counts as foreign policy experience. It was meant as satire. No one really expected Republicans to make the argument.

And yet, he we are. On ABC's "World News Tonight," none other than John McCain became the latest Republican to make the connection.

Don Miller at the DNC

Don Miller (author of Blue Like Jazz) just closed the first night of the Democratic Convention with a benediction....Try to find it, I'm sure it'll be all over youtube by the morning...It was amazing....but for now, here's an interview that he did with Christianity Today....

Obama and McCain respond to "What is Evil?" at Saddleback Church

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/08/comparing-obama-and-mc...

Question: Does evil exist and if it does, do we ignore it, do we negotiate with it, do we contain it or do we defeat it?

Obama's answer:

Two articles

This article is about Obama's tire gauge solution:

And this article is about McCain trying to portray Obama as the Antichrist:

Obama and Christians (Part 2)

!!!!!!!

Some of these Christian leaders are being denied the right to take part in communion at their churches just because they openly support Obama's nomination to the presidency!!!

Matthew 25 Network

Jeremiah Wright, Evangelicals' Brother in Christ

Reporter: "How often does Obama go to church?"

Wright: "About as often as you do."

There was truth in Wright's outing of Obama as a less-than-regular churchgoer. This is no surprise: Ask the other two candidates for proof of their Sunday attendance and you'll see what I mean. Celebrities in general and politicians in particular might have a better (if still theologically poor) excuse than many of us for not worshiping corporately.

The Ant

I think there's some truth to the modern version.. read on..

The Ant
>> Two Different Versions! Two Different Morals!
>> OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

>> MODERN VERSION:

Gas Tax Holiday... Does it work??

The Pinocchio Test
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2008/04/a_holiday_from_gas_p...

The advocates of a "gas tax holiday" are exaggerating the benefits to consumers from their proposal. If the Illinois experience is a guide, there is likely to be some reduction in the price of gas, but it would fall well short of the size of the tax reduction. In order to pay for the tax cut, the government would have to cut back on highway construction and maintenance or find some other way of plugging the shortfall in revenues to the Highway Trust Fund.

Student 'Twitters' his way out of Egyptian jail

By Mallory Simon
CNN

(CNN) -- James Karl Buck helped free himself from an Egyptian jail with a one-word blog post from his cell phone.

Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and his translator, Mohammed Maree, were arrested April 10.

On his way to the police station, Buck took out his cell phone and sent a message to his friends and contacts using the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The message only had one word. "Arrested."

Clinging to dream of Palestine village

Clinging to dream of Palestine village

BBC News, Iqrit, Israel

According to our Israeli road atlas, Route 899 runs from the sea along the Lebanese border to the town of Sasa, and along the way passes an "archaeological ruin" called Iqrit.

The three-dot symbol on the map is one of hundreds of such locations throughout this historically rich land - but this is no biblical or Roman-era relic.

A City Where You Can’t Hear Yourself Scream

By MICHAEL SLACKMAN

CAIRO — Egyptians in this capital city say it is harder and harder to be heard and to have a voice, but they are not talking politics. Well, not only politics.

What they are talking about, or rather yelling about, is noise, the incredible background noise of a city crammed with 18 million people, and millions of drivers who always have one hand on the horn and a rules-free way of thinking.

The Story of Barack Obama's Mother by the TIME

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524,00.html

Each of us lives a life of contradictory truths. We are not one thing or another. Barack Obama's mother was at least a dozen things. S. Ann Soetoro was a teen mother who later got a Ph.D. in anthropology; a white woman from the Midwest who was more comfortable in Indonesia; a natural-born mother obsessed with her work; a romantic pragmatist, if such a thing is possible.

US vessel 'shoots at Suez boat'

The ship was reportedly carrying used military equipment
A US container ship approaching the Suez Canal has opened fire on a small Egyptian motorboat, killing one man and wounding two others, reports say.
The Global Patriot, carrying used US military equipment, was in the Gulf of Suez when it was approached by a motorboat selling local merchandise.

Its crew apparently fired after the boat failed to heed warnings to stop when asked, the US navy said.

It added that it was in contact with Egypt through the US embassy in Cairo.
